The Visit

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is one of the six regional accrediting bodies in North America and evaluates colleges and universities in nineteen states.  HLC requires colleges to submit self-studies and performs site visits to determine that a college is effective in providing education to its students.  Without accreditation, a college cannot offer its student federal financial aid.
Touring the Maple Woods, Blue River, and Penn Valley, the site team concluded their visit today and should be filing their positive findings soon. The college spent significant time preparing for the visit and writing the assurance argument.
Accreditation is incredibly important to a college, but MCC expects to continue to maintain its accreditation as it has since its founding.

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is about love.  It’s a lot like higher education.  When I was a student at Penn Valley, most of my classmates were pursing degrees for someone else in their lives.  A child, a spouse, a parent, someone whose life could be improved, or to make someone proud.  Let’s take a moment to appreciate the people who truly matter to us, who have inspired us to better ourselves and who make it possible for us to pursue education by their sacrifices.  Thank you to everyone.

Manufacturing to Midtown

One of my highest priorities is moving forward!  MCC got great news just the past week – MCC’s offer to buy property at 29th and Troost was accepted.  This means that manufacturing career and technical education will relocate back into Kansas City’s urban center. I have long championed this move, because the result will be better service to our students.  This change began with MCC’s decision to close the Business and Technology Campus (BTC), a move I supported. Located on Front Street, BTC was simply not accessible enough for students who depend on public transportation.  I am proud of supporting this MCC decision that will bring manufacturing education back to Kansas City’s urban center – a move that will better serve our students and their communities.
